The Rules of Engagement 2009

For the last two Januarys, author Trent Jackson started the year off right by making a list of rules to guide his actions for the upcoming year. I thought it was a very useful exercise, so I came up with my own list for 2009.As we begin this journey, I think the perfect way to start is to post my “rules of engagement” to remind myself of a few things.

Here it is…

The Rules of Engagement 2009

1. Stay organized and clean. Tangible clutter makes its way inside your mind.

2. Look your best everyday; you never know who’s looking.

3. Think long term. Plan for the future and know the past can come back to haunt you.

4. Give back. Your expertise means nothing if no one knows about it except for you.

5. The world (read: your life) is messed up, yes. But that doesn’t mean you can’t focus on the good (people and things) in it.

6. Write often. It’s time to be a producer of knowledge and not just a consumer.

7. You can lead the horse to water…

8. Until the institution is dismantled respect the system that has decision-making power over you.

9. If it walks like drama, talks like drama, and smells like drama it probably is.

10. Ignorance is bliss, so only engage those outside the matrix (because it’s too much energy arguing with Mr. Smith).

11. Stubborn isn’t in this year. Don’t compromise your values, but don’t do things just to make a point (because no one cares except for you).

12. Your health should be a priority, especially if you plan on being alone for the rest of your life.

13. Relaxation is the reward for hard work. Boredom is Lucifer’s right hand man.
