Internet Peanut Butter and Jelly

I hold a bachelors degree in Psychology and Media. When I tell people this, they are often confused. “Why would you major in two unrelated disciplines?” they ask.

Well it makes perfect sense to me.

To me, psychology and media go together like peanut butter and jelly. Studying the brain and examining how mass communication influences minds around the world go hand in hand, especially when examining issues of sex and sexuality.

When launching this site, one of my main concerns was building an audience while still covering ALL the things that are important to me. Looking at the initial posts, I can completely see a situation where someone would be interested in the commencement speech piece and have no clue who Chico Debarge is. Ultimately though, I think the mark of a good blog is to offer a focused perspective while also introducing readers to new things.

It’s very exciting to see as the internet grows, people are more willing to show different sides of themselves, even if it may not make sense to the general public. Humans are complex individuals with varying interests and should be embraced as such. Let’s look at a few case studies of sites mixing two unconventional topics:

The Muzophile Blog
Combining: (Dance) Music and (Gay) Porn

Come for the music news, stay for the hot guys. But seriously, it was nice to see a music blog that covered most of the artists I care about and also throw in some eye candy every now and then.

AnalogHype
Combing: Hip-Hop and Video Games

Yes, 30 is quickly approaching and I still love to play video games. With the proliferation of social aspects in gaming (e.g Xbox Live, Playstation Network), gamers are feeling the need to create sub-communities bases on many identities (e.g. race, class, sexuality, etc.). I want to do another post on the emergence of the “urban gamer” but for now check out this blog covering hip-hop news and game reviews. There are a few, but this is one of the better ones.

Papi Chulo’s Blog
ABSOLUTELY NOT SAFE FOR WORK (NSFW)
Combining: Straight Porn AND Gay Porn(?)

Papi Chulo’s blog fascinates me. Who is the target audience? Bisexuals?
Aimed at “merging the mainstream entertainment industry and the adult industry,” is he accomplishing his mission or is it just sensory overload (or both)?

Any other interesting combinations going around I should know about?
